Gary Steele - Executive Creative Director
Gary’s advertising career began at a very young age where he was hand type-setting and scanning film in his Dad’s advertising reproduction house. It was here Gary discovered his love for typography, design and art and stepped straight from school into the industry; and hasn’t skipped a day since. His career has seen him practice his craft on three different continents over a span of 19 years. And in that time, his keen eye for classy art direction has spotted some of the world’s most celebrated logos in the bottom right hand corner of his layouts.
But the bottom right hand corner is about the only ‘rule’ Gary follows. Because what sets him apart from his peers, is his burning desire to create advertising that doesn’t resemble advertising.
His most awarded work falls into categories beyond the ordinary and it’s this work that has been recognised at the Cannes Festival of Creativity, Webby’s, D&AD, Clio Awards, One Show, New York Festivals, London Internationals, Epica and Spikes Internationals, to name a few.
Gary’s desire to always be better in all that he does is evident in his leadership of TBWA\Singapore, with the agency being recognised as the “Best Integrated Agency in South East Asia” by Campaign Agencyof the Year 2017. This is a personal achievement for Gary as since becoming ECD in 2016 and achieving second place that same year, he was determined to win Best Agency the following year.
But if you ask Gary what makes him the most proud, he will tell you it’s the people he has worked with and mentored and watching how they have grown and developed. The greatest award of all is seeing their talent get recognised by industry peers often resulting in them being poached and offered other career opportunities. With one of Gary’s creative teams recently winning Creative Team of the Year at 2017’s Hall of Fame Awards as well as one of his writer’s picking up Young Creative of the year 2017 at the CCA Gong Awards, this is something Gary will need to get accustomed to.
